fun fact: Switchel Is Not Kombucha

We’re Not Kombucha
We get this one a lot, so let’s clear it up:
Switchel is not kombucha.
Different drink. Different roots. Different vibe.
Kombucha is traditionally a fermented tea beverage, usually made with black tea or green tea, sugar, and a SCOBY culture. It’s known for probiotics, some funk, some fizz, and often contains a small amount of caffeine and trace alcohol from fermentation.
Great drink, we love our Idaho Kombucha makers, AND it’s not what we make.
Switchel comes from a different tradition entirely.
Historically known as Haymaker’s Punch, switchel was a refreshing farm drink made for long, hot days of physical labor. Classic recipes often included apple cider vinegar, ginger, water, and mineral-rich sweeteners like molasses, sorghum, or maple syrup.
In other words she is a drink geared to rehydrate, replenish, and refresh. Even 300 years later, this still hits.
We’d also argue switchel is simply more refreshing.
It has a bright tang instead of a funky ferment. Clean, crisp, thirst-quenching, with just enough bite to keep things interesting.
At ERTH, we make our switchel with:
-
Raw Idaho honey
-
Unfiltered Idaho apple cider vinegar
-
Cold-pressed juice
-
Utah Pink Salt
We use honey because we’re an Idaho company, and honey makes sense here.
